Paralympic Games Turin 2006: Aster the mascot announced one year to go!

Today marks one year to go to the Paralympic Games of Turin 2006 (10-19 March 2006). Aster, the freshly unveiled mascot of the Paralympic Games launched this final countdown.

Over 600 athletes with a disability
The 2006 Paralympic Games will host over 600 athletes with a disability who will compete in four sports: Alpine Skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey, Nordic Skiing
and Wheelchair Curling.

Aster – the symbol of the Games
The Paralympic mascot’s name is Aster: it has the shape, colour, structure and lightness of a snowflake, and is the symbol of the Paralympic Winter Games of Turin 2006, representing its spirit by exalting the participants’ athletic results rather than their disabilities. Agile and dynamic, the figure is able to take on, thanks to its shape, all the specific positions of the Paralympic disciplines and to represent, then, all the athletes in a positive and natural way. The Paralympic mascot was designed by Portuguese Pedro Albuquerque, also creator of the Olympic mascots, Neve and Gliz.

Invitation to the Games
On the occasion of the celebration of Paralympic MenoUno, Phil Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and member of the IOC, signed and handed over to the President of the Italian Paralympic Committee, Luca Pancalli, the invitation to take part in the IX Paralympic Games of Turin 2006. This ceremony, for the other Paralympic Committees, took place in Bonn.

Facilities ready to welcome the competitions
The organisation of the Games for athletes with a disability is moving ahead well. The Sport Events already held - Alpine skiing and Nordic Skiing - have shown that the facilities are ready to welcome the competitions of the Paralympic athletes. In a few days, from 15 to 17 of March, athletes will also test the Palaghiaccio of Pinerolo, where the curling matches will be held, and, in November, it will be the turn of Torino Esposizioni with the Ice Sledge Hockey tournament.

Ticket sales as from 2 June 2005
Tomorrow, the prices of the Paralympic tickets – which will go on sale from 2 June 2005 - will be unveiled. Tickets will cost between 12 and 30 euros. The prices of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies range from 20 to 80 euros. Reduced prices are being planned for schools. Information and the price list will be available on the official Internet site: www.paralympicgames.torino2006.org.
