The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Buenos Aires 2018 brought together young people from all around the world, often for their first Olympic experience. How better to tell their unique stories than from their own point of view? Worldwide Olympic Partner Panasonic has been supporting two programmes that have enabled young people, including athletes, to learn about film storytelling, and also to create stories and share their experience of the YOG.

The Young Reporters Programme brought together 40 journalism students from all over Argentina to participate as volunteers within the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (BAYOGOC)’s communications team. These Young Reporters were responsible for creating stories that were published on the official BAYOGOC social media platforms and website. Surrounded by experienced professionals, the Young Reporters learnt how to create compelling content and share it with an international audience.

These 40 reporters were divided into photographers, camera operators, writers and social media specialists. All the photographers and camera operators worked with Panasonic equipment to ensure the best image quality.

Lucas Coppolecchia, the 24-year-old audiovisual specialist who was overseeing the programme along with colleague Sebastián Badino, commented: “We imagined that the Young Reporters would play a key role in covering Buenos Aires 2018, providing a different angle and creating fun stories that would resonate with a young audience. They proved to be perfect for the task.  But we also needed good-quality images that could be used for our different platforms. And the truth is that without Panasonic cameras, we wouldn't be able to carry out this project, so we are amazingly thankful for their contribution.”

In addition, Panasonic supports the Athletes’ Point of View project, which was part of the Buenos Aires 2018 Learn and Share programme and is managed by Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS). This educational initiative encourages and teaches young athletes to capture their favourite Olympic moments and share them in an engaging way with a new generation of fans and followers. For this purpose, Panasonic provided 15 wearable cameras and 20 video cameras.

"It was great to see the engagement of the young athletes who participated in the PoV activity. Many participants who submitted a video came back to work on a second one. They got excited to learn new filming techniques and to see improvement in the quality of their videos. I am sure the possibility of winning a camera in our daily video contests was a big incentive to all of them - said Luana Florentino, PoV Coordinator.

"Panasonic’s support made an incredible contribution to the POV program. Over 2000 of the athletes came to our area to discuss visual storytelling" - added Jim Owens, OBS Academic Director.
