Lausanne, 19 January 2001 - Ceremony to Mark the Official Invitation to Participate in the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City -
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will host a ceremony to commemorate the dispatch of the invitations to take part in the XIX Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 (from 8 to 24 February) to the National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Details for the media are below.
The ceremony will start with the opening speeches of the IOC President and Ms Sharon Capeling-Alakija, executive coordinator of the United Nations Volunteer Programme in the presence of volunteers of past Winter Games (Albertville, Lillehammer and Nagano).
These will be followed by a presentation from the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC), including a speech from Mr. Mitt Romney, president of SLOC, via video transmission.
The IOC President will then symbolically sign six invitations (USA, Japan, Norway, Australia, Switzerland and South Africa) to the Olympic Winter Games.

The ceremony will be open to the media to record any portion of the ceremony they wish.
A workroom with the necessary facilities will be set up at the Olympic Museum, Barcelona room, level -1.
