The Equestrian Park opened in 1940 with the purpose of providing equestrian training for riders and horses, hosting equestrian competitions, offering the horse-related educational programmes, and training horse racing jockeys. Since the Equestrian Park was selected as the venue for equestrian competition at the cancelled Olympic Games Tokyo 1940, it was a natural choice for the equestrian events at the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964.

Since the Games, its facilities – which include an equestrian competition field, indoor/outdoor training arenas, a 1,100m racetrack, clubhouse, stables, clinic, farriery and office buildings – have continued to be used for competitions and events to promote horse riding. The entire venue has been renovated to host the equestrian events at Tokyo 2020.
