The Olympic Stadium was purpose-built for the Games before being reconfigured to host a number of major sporting and non-sporting events, such as music concerts. Most notably, the stadium hosted many key games during the 2003 Rugby World Cup, including the semi-finals, the third-place playoff and the final, as well as holding the National Rugby League Grand Final between 1999 and 2019.

In March 2018, the New South Wales Government announced that it would refurbish the stadium in an attempt to cement Sydney as Australia’s number one event destination.
