Olympic Flame reaches new heights as Sochi 2014 Torch Relay enters final week
The record-breaking Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay has entered its final week, with recent highlights including the Olympic Flame’s ascent of Mt Elbrus – the highest point in Europe.
The Sochi 2014 Organising Committee announced on Saturday that a special cauldron had been lit in October at the 5,642-metre western peak of Elbrus, as part of Sochi 2014’s “special projects”, which have also seen the Olympic Torch taken to the North Pole, Lake Baikal – the world’s deepest and oldest lake – and even outer space.
The main Torch Relay route, meanwhile, has been continuing its epic 123-day journey across Russia, which will culminate at the Opening Ceremony of Sochi 2014 on 7 February 2014.
During the past week, Olympic champions Dzhamal Otarsultanov, Rakhim Chakhkiev, Vladimir Yumin, Zagalav Abdulbekov and Khadzhimurad Magomedov were among the Torchbearers as the Olympic Flame passed through Grozny, Magas, Makhachkala and Astrakhan.
In Vladikavkaz, Torchbearers included Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling champions Alan Khugayev and Khasan Baroyev, while in Nalchik, Youth Olympic Games high jump gold medallist Maria Kuchina and Olympic wrestling champions Murat Kardanov and Aslanbek Khushtov all had their own opportunity to carry the Olympic flame.
"Our republic has brought up many Olympic champions, and today it has earned the right to host the Olympic Torch Relay," said Khushtov. "This is the perfect stimulus for our young athletes to work, train and strive for Olympic victories!"
During the final few days of the relay, the Olympic Flame will visit Maykop and Krasnodar, before reaching Sochi.
The relay will conclude at the Opening Ceremony following a record-breaking 65,000km route across Russia, which was designed to ensure that approximately 90% of the country's population would be within an hour of the Relay at some stage, allowing around 130 million residents to participate in the event.
