Olympic basketball draw

On 7 November, the first Olympic team sports federation, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), held the draw for its Olympic tournament, to be staged during the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004. The draw was one of several points discussed during a meeting held in Lausanne between IOC President Jacques Rogge and FIBA President Carl Men Ky Ching.

Two groups for preliminary rounds
Two groups were drawn for the preliminary rounds of the basketball tournament: Group A consists of the People's Republic of China, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Argentina and Serbia and Montenegro; while Group B comprises Angola, Australia, Greece, Lithuania, Puerto Rico and the USA.

From 14 to 28 August 2004
The Athens 2004 Olympic Games basketball tournament will last 15 days. The preliminary rounds and the games for places 9, 10, 11 and 12 will be held in the Indoor Arena of the Helliniko Olympic Complex, which has a total capacity of 15,000 seats. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be held on the four final game days (25-28 August) at the Olympic Indoor Hall, within the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, where the total capacity is 18,000 seats.

First meeting
FIBA President Carl Men Ky Ching, accompanied by FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann, met, Monday 10 November, for the first time with IOC President Jacques Rogge to discuss general ideas and views on basketball.
