Olympians Join Football Fever

Olympians Join Football Fever
Football fever spread to the IOC Athletes’ Commission yesterday as some of its members took to the pitch in a friendly match in Lausanne. The teams were captained by IOC Athletes’ Commission Chairman Sergey Bubka and Commission Vice-Chairman Prince Albert II of Monaco. The sides included some of the top Olympians in the world; both current and former members of the Commission – in addition to IOC staff members.
Penalty Shoot-out
During a hard fought 60 minutes at the Juan Antonio Samaranch Stadium and in the presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge as well as present and former members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, both teams gave the best of themselves in true Olympic spirit. Victory finally went to Sergey Bubka’s team following a penalty shoot-out after the score at the end of regulation time was 3-3.
The penalty shoot-out saw Prince Albert II of Monaco score for his team as did Vladimir Smirnov, an Olympic cross country skiing gold medalist, four-time silver medalist and two-time bronze medalist. Team Bubka snatched victory however with three successful penalty kicks scored by the team captain himself, by double Olympic silver medalist in the 100m and 200m Frankie Fredericks and by Ice Hockey bronze medalist Jari Kurri.
25th Anniversary
The match was organised as part of the activities for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. The three-day Lausanne visit will conclude with a joint meeting with the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday.
Created on 27 October 1981, the Athletes' Commission is the link between active athletes and the IOC. It is composed of 19 members which include active and retired athletes. Twelve athletes are elected for eight years by the athletes competing at the Olympic Games and seven are appointed by the IOC President to ensure a fair balance in terms of gender, sports and regions. The Commission holds at least one meeting each year and meets regularly with the IOC Executive Board, to which it issues recommendations.
