Norwegian women’s team on the road to Beijing
The Norwegian women’s handball team has qualified for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 in Beijing, after their victory this weekend over the Russian team, at the final of the 7th European Championships in Stockholm (Sweden). This is the third European title for Norway, following their victories in 1998 and 2004.
Absent in Athens
With this qualification for the Games in 2008, the Norwegian team can put aside its non-qualification for the previous Olympic tournament in Athens in 2004, after obtaining the bronze medal in Sydney in 2000. In the final in Stockholm, the Norwegian players beat the Russian world champions 27-24.
Equality in Beijing
For the first time, the women’s Olympic handball tournament will have as many teams as the men’s tournament (12).
Apart from China, which automatically qualifies as the host country, and Norway, we will see in Beijing the winners of the continental championships in the zones of Asia, America and Africa, as well as the winners of the 2007 world championships, which will take place in France from 2 to 16 December 2007, and the teams which come first and second in the three upcoming International Handball Federation (IHF) qualifying tournaments. The women’s Olympic handball tournament will take place as from 9 August 2008 at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium for the preliminary sessions and at the National Indoor Stadium for the semi-finals and the final. So, to find out who will succeed Denmark as Olympic champion, we will have to wait until 23 August 2008.
