Mixed results for South American pairs in the beach volleyball

Several South American teams recorded hard-fought victories in the beach volleyball preliminaries at Nanjing’s Olympic Games Sports Park Beach Volleyball Venue on 18 August.

However one South American duo to miss out on a win were the highly rated Brazilians George Souto Maior Wetherley/Arthur Diego Mariano Lanci. They lost their Pool B match against German pair Niklas Rudolf/Eric Stadie, who came back from a set down to claim the second set 22-20 and the third 15-12 to secure an inspirational victory.

The three other South American men’s pairings in action were more successful were Luis Bramont Arias/Jimy Heredia (PER), Jose Gregorio Gomez/Rolando Hernandez (VEN) and Marco Cairus Lucarelli/Mauricio Sebastian Vieyto Acosta (URU), each of whom won over three sets.

In the women's competition the South Americans had to work equally hard for their victories, with Lia Fortunati Beltran/Maria Florencia Rotti Giordano (URU) winning 16-21, 21,18 15-7 against Selin Yurtsever/Esra Betul Cetin (TUR) in Pool C, while in Pool F, Argentinians Irene Virasio/Camila Hiruela Tapia edged out Phoebe Bell/Britt Kendall (AUS) 23-21, 17-21, 15-10.
Highly fancied Brazilian women's pair Duda/Paty (BRA) had a more straightforward 21-19, 21-8 win over Czech duo Katerina Valkova/Kristyna Adamcikova (CZE), but there was heartache for China's Jiaxi Wang/Lvwen Yuan (CHN) who had to forfeit their match against Congo pairing Petronie Nkoka Ndoungou/Ursia Reine Moyipele (CGO) because of injury.
