MESSAGE OF THE IOC PRESIDENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE UNITED NATIONS DAY
Sydney, 20 October 2000 - The President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, has addressed the following message of support on the occasion of the United Nations Day.
“On the occasion of the United Nations Day, I wish to reiterate the support of the Olympic Movement for the organization which stands for the well-being of humankind and peace world-wide.
Through its cooperation agreements with the United Nations specialized agencies and programmes, the Olympic Movement strives to make a symbolic contribution to the search for solutions to the problems which affect our society at large, such as the development of education, health promotion, eradication of poverty, humanitarian assistance, and environmental protection.
The Olympic Movement will continue to uphold its engagement to promote peace, solidarity and human rights through sport and the Olympic ideals. I therefore call upon all International Sports Federations and National Olympic Committees to work closely with the United Nations system at all levels, with a view to building a peaceful and better world for present and future generations.”
