MEDIA SCHEDULE FOR EPO DETECTION TEST MEETING

Lausanne, 5 November 2001 - The Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), together with several external experts, laboratory partners, and a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) representative, will meet on 7 November in Lausanne to review the present status of detecting recombinant, or artificial, erythropoietin (rEPO) in urine and to define the criteria for declaring a positive result.

This meeting follows an IOC sponsored inter-laboratory comparison study on rEPO detection in urine through the analysis developed by the French research team (Lasne and de Ceaurriz, Nature, 2000). In August 2000, a combined protocol involving blood and urine evidence was approved for the testing of rEPO abuse during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

A press conference will be organised at the end of the day to announce the group’s findings.
