Medal glory for Saudi rider

The Youth Olympic Games is an event of firsts and Dalma Rushdi Malas is one of them.  She is the first female Saudi athlete to compete in an Olympic competition and today claimed bronze medal in her Equestrian Jumping event on her horse ‘Flash Top Hat.’

According to the International Equestrian Federation, Dalma showed considerable improvement over the last week of riding and today brought crowds to their feet after riding a faultless clear, with tight corners and a good burst of speed.

Dalma said, “what a day, it was a real high.  I still can’t believe I have this medal, it hasn’t sunk in yet!”

The International Olympic Committee is dedicated to work for universality and gender balance across all sports in Olympic events and has welcomed the first Saudi female athlete.  But at the end of the day, this is a simple story of a young woman striving to achieve at the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games… and she did just that!
