The LA candidature committee gained invaluable insight into the day-to-day operations of delivering the games after taking part in the IOC Observer Programme at Rio 2016. Here they describe their experience during Rio.
Parabéns, belo Rio! The Los Angeles Candidature Committee spent three wonderful weeks meeting with the Olympic family and participating in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Observer Programme to learn first-hand how to ensure ideal conditions for elite athletes and all Games clients.
Our team learned that the Olympic spirit is alive and well in Brazil, and we were also reminded that the Olympic Games are much more than a celebration of sport; they are a celebration of our united humanity. A great example was the friendly interaction and cooperation with the fellow Candidate Cities throughout the Games.
The Olympic family gave us excellent feedback on our vision for a New Games for a New Era, which we call “Follow the Sun”. The Olympic Games Rio 2016 showed us how cities can use a stunning landscape like the coastline as a stage for sports, how new public transit can be used successfully to bring fans quickly to events, how entertainment can be incorporated in venues to excite and attract new fans, and how the city’s diversity and tolerance can ensure all visitors feel welcome.
We are incredibly grateful for the warm welcome we received from the Olympic family and from the people of Rio. Our time in this great city has inspired us to reach even higher in placing California’s technology, creativity and innovation at the service of the Olympic Movement.
