London 2012 handball schedule announced
The schedule for the London 2012 handball competition has been confirmed, revealing when teams will face each other in the preliminary rounds of the tournaments in the Olympic Park.
The women’s competition gets underway with reigning Olympic champions Norway taking on France in a repeat of the 2011 World Championships final, while Great Britain’s women will also play on 28 July, taking on fellow Olympic debutants Montenegro.
In the men’s competition, current Olympic champions France start their tournament with a match against Great Britain on 29 July. Serbia will take on Croatia on 31 July in a repeat of the Euro 2012 Championship match, which Serbia won.
The announcement comes after the draw was held last month to confirm the groups for the preliminary stage of the event, which takes place at the Copper Box before the action moves to the Basketball Arena.
International Handball Federation President Dr Hassan Moustafa said: “The promotion of handball has been tremendous in Great Britain since London was awarded as host of the 2012 Olympic Games in June 2005.
“We are proud to welcome the world of handball in London and we are sure that we will see thrilling, brilliant matches with the best players of the world.”
Following 10 days of preliminary competition, the knockout matches will start on 7 August. The women's medals will be awarded on 11 August, followed by the men's the next day.
