Lillehammer 2016 Winter YOG set to open 22 years after historic Olympic Winter Games

On 12 February 2016, all eyes will turn to Lillehammer for the Opening Ceremony of the second Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG). This revised date, which replaces the originally proposed date of 26 February, will not only launch 10 days of sporting action and engaging cultural activities, but it will be exactly 22 years since the Olympic flame was lit in the same Norwegian city in 1994 for the Olympic Winter Games.

“We are looking forward to creating Olympic experiences for a whole new generation”, commented the Acting CEO of the Lillehammer 2016 Organising Committee, Tomas Holmestad. “Nothing pleases us more than the symbolism that comes with the fact of having Lillehammer 2016’s Opening Ceremony on 12 February, exactly 22 years after the last Olympic Opening Ceremony in Lillehammer.”

The Lillehammer 2016 Youth Olympic Games will take place from 12 to 21 February 2016. So whether you’re an Olympic fan, an aspiring young athlete or a keen volunteer, make a note in your diaries! See you there!
