LEON STUKELJ AWARDED IOC MEDAL POSTHUMOUSLY


Lausanne, 12 November 1999 - The IOC President awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal to Léon Stukelj’s spouse, Mrs. Lidija Stukelj, at the oldest Olympic champion’s funeral today in Maribor, Slovenia.

The Pierre de Coubertin Medal, which was created in 1997, is a tribute to people and institutions who help promote Olympism through their teaching, research and writing of academic works.

The memorial service was held in the Slovene National Theatre in the presence of the IOC President and Mr. Grandi, president of the International Gymnastics Federation, among other national personalities.

The gymnast Léon Stukelj, who had won several Olympic medals during his career, died on 8 November, a few days short of his 101st birthday.
