With the Closing Ceremony about to kick off, here is a look back at some of the key numbers from the 3rd edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
Athletes from 79 National Olympic Committees competed in 81 events in 8 sports and 16 disciplines at 8 competition venues in the cantons of Vaud (Lausanne, the Vallée de Joux, Leysin, Les Diablerets and Villars), Valais (Champéry) and Graubünden (St Moritz), and in neighbouring France (Les Rousses, Stade des Tuffes). For the first time in Winter Olympic history, gender parity was achieved, with equal quotas for men and women.
In total, more than 640,000 spectators took advantage of the free events to attend the Games, either the competitions or the "En Jeux!" festivals, including 80,000 schoolchildren across the 8 competition venues.
The "En Jeux!" festivals at all the venues were a key part of the Games’ success, mixing sport, culture and fun at each site. In Lausanne alone, 200,000 visitors attended the shows or participated in the many sports initiation and fun activities. The medal ceremonies drew an average of 2,000 spectators each evening at the Place des Médailles in the city centre Flon district.
With sustainability high on the agenda, access to public transport was provided for all delegations, volunteers, media and staff to travel to and from venues, and as many as 80 per cent of the delegations used the public transport system to reach the venues.
For fans and audiences around the world, 1,000 accredited media from 39 countries and 4 continents reported on the Games, while the YOG were aired in 191 countries around the world, compared with 89 in Lillehammer in 2016. More than 165 hours of live coverage were produced by Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS).
With young audiences the priority to reach and inspire, the YOG were covered extensively on social and digital media. An average of over 200,000 people visited the Olympic digital platforms on a daily basis, and the social handles gathered close to 500,000 new followers. The official app was downloaded more than 40,000 times, and remained one of the three most downloaded sports apps in Switzerland throughout the Games.
The IOC’s global Olympic Channel digital platform ensured worldwide coverage for Lausanne 2020, which included a 24/7 Youth Olympic Games Channel that was also distributed to rights holders and more than 40 partners within the Olympic family.
Virginie Faivre, President of Lausanne 2020, commented: "The Games are coming to an end, and everywhere the pressure is mounting to leave with a feeling of pride and accomplishment. The festivities were indeed great, from the spectacular performances of the athletes to the enthusiasm of the spectators, and the exceptional atmosphere at the En Jeux! festivals. It is with great pride that we are about to close this wonderful sporting and cultural adventure that was Lausanne 2020. A unique moment which will remain forever engraved in our hearts and memories."
IOC President Thomas Bach said: “The Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 have been a huge success. We are delighted that the Organising Committee fully adopted the reforms of the IOC and Olympic Agenda 2020. These reforms meant that we saw new sports and new disciplines at these Games. They led to full gender balance and highly inclusive Games. All I can say is thank you to the people of Lausanne, Vaud and Switzerland for hosting the Youth Olympic Games in this way, and for welcoming the athletes with hospitality and fraternity; and in particular I would like to thank all the volunteers, who have been the face of these Games and who have made this a unique Olympic experience for athletes from all over the world.”
