Jacques Rogge: "The message is that Athens is ready"
Upon arriving at Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport at 3 p.m. yesterday, IOC President Jacques ROGGE was met by ATHOC President Gianna ANGELOPOULOS-DASKALAKI and the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Lambis NIKOLAOU. President Rogge expressed his satisfaction with the Games preparations and his confidence the Games will be very successful.
“I think it’s a magic moment because this is the culmination of seven years of preparation and in a little more than a week’s time, the Games will begin and the whole world is waiting for that and we are very excited about that,” said President Rogge.
Heading towards very,very succesful Games
“I’m sure that Athens is ready. You know that the IOC has always expressed its confidence in its Greek friends. We knew that the promises of the Organising Committee and also the government would be fulfilled, and I’m very glad to see that that this the case and that we are heading towards very, very successful Games,” President Rogge added.
“The security measures will not affect the mood of the Games. They are necessary; they are needed. I commend the Greek government for having done everything that is humanly possible, and that is also what the world expects for something like the Olympic Games, but it will not affect the joy of the athletes and the joy of the public,” said President Rogge.
“Well, the message is that Athens is ready and that Athens will give us magical Games. And I know that all the athletes around the world have had the dream of coming and competing in Athens. The doors are open and now they can come in, and in a week’s time the big event will begin,” President Rogge concluded.
"So many years of hard work, of huge effort, we are ready"
On meeting IOC President Rogge, Mrs Angelopoulos-Daskalaki said: “After so many years of hard work, of huge effort, we are ready. All facilities are ready, the Olympic Village is ready, and our team - the ATHOC team - is ready, fully operational. The volunteers, they are very enthusiastic. The society is with us, they respect all the measures that will make our life and everybody’s life easier these days. And of course now is the big moment: we receive the President and his wife. Dr Rogge is a man who we have worked well with for years. We had the same anxieties, but we always believed this could happen. And now we see that happening, we wish him welcome here and we believe we will offer humanity unique Games on a human scale. What we promised - that Athens will be great for the athletes - we show now.”
