Iraq's boxing team begins training

The Iraqi boxing team is about to begin training to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) recently announced. The team includes 22 fighters and 4 coaches.

Eleven weight divisions
The boxers are divided into 11 weight divisions. The Iraqi Boxing Federation has chosen the best fighters and coaches from all over Iraq. The team will train with former American fighter Termite Watkins, who participated in the 1976 Games.

Several qualification opportunities
The Iraqi boxing team will have its first opportunity to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games when it travels to Manila in January. Subsequent qualifying matches will be held in March in China and in April in Pakistan.

Equipment and resources
The Coalition Provisional Authority is providing equipment and other resources for the boxing team. The IOC, through an Olympic Solidarity programme, has coordinated this process with the CPA and the Interim Committee to Administer Sport in Iraq.
