IOC Sanctions Belarussian NOC

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sanctioned the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus and one of its officials today in Salt Lake City in conjunction with an athlete's failure to report for a doping control test and unauthorized withdrawal from the Olympic Winter Games. The IOC Executive Board: - suspended both the IOC's and Olympic Solidarity's financial support of the Belarussian NOC until 31 December 2002; - excluded the Belarus Chef de Mission from the 2002 Olympic Winter Games; and - initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of the athlete's failure to report for the doping control test and unauthorized withdrawal from the Games, until the conclusion of which inquiry the athlete will be precluded from further participating in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. These actions are in accordance with the Olympic Charter and the IOC's resolve to fight against doping in sport.
