IOC President to meet Ukrainian President Poroshenko
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach left Sochi on Monday to prepare for a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The two leaders are scheduled to meet on Tuesday at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The pair will discuss the power of sport to bring peace and reconciliation. Also under discussion will be an IOC initiative that has helped Ukrainian athletes in areas affected by civil strife to relocate to more peaceful areas of the country to carry on their training. The IOC established an emergency fund of USD 300,000 last year to be used for the benefit of the Ukrainian athletes, through the NOC of Ukraine, for training and competition purposes.
The meeting comes after a busy week which saw the IOC President celebrate the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development with the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the United Nations headquarters in New York. After meetings with President François Hollande of France and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from Hungary, President Bach visited Serbia and Kosovo, before attending SportAccord where he had a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
