IOC President Thomas Bach tests new IOC online education platform for elite athletes

The IOC Athlete Learning Gateway, the new online education service aimed at elite athletes and their coaches, was officially tested today by IOC President Thomas Bach, Olympic gold medallist in 1976, together with Claudia Bokel, Olympic silver medallist in 2004 and Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, and Tony Estanguet, Olympic gold medallist in 2000, 2004 and 2012 and a member of the Athletes’ Commission.

The Athlete Learning Gateway is one of the first tangible projects to come out of Olympic Agenda 2020 (recommendation 18). This interactive platform will provide elite athletes with courses and live online seminars aimed at helping them boost their performances and shape their future careers. Many Olympians and coaches as well as sports institutes, sports leaders and leading academics have contributed content for this programme, which will offer modules on a wide range of topics such as nutrition, psychology, leadership, sports technology and injury prevention.

Today at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Olympians Anne-Sophie Thilo (sailing), Wilson Kipketer  (athletics), Scott Richardson (cycling), Rebecca Wardell (athletics), and Jazmine Fenlator (bobsleigh), and the IOC staff joined the IOC President in discussions about the IOC’s role to support athletes in preparing their professional career through the world’s best academics and learning tools.

President Bach said: “The launch of this Athlete Learning Gateway is a very important step in the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020, and we will make it accessible to as many athletes as possible around the world. Two hundred countries have access to it, and almost 5,000 athletes have so far registered for the first couple of months, so we have made great progress already, and I would like to congratulate all those who have made this possible .”

Strengthening support to athletes on and off the field of play is a key topic within Olympic Agenda 2020, and the IOC President was pleased to announce that the Athlete Learning Gateway will officially go live on 28 May during the 7th IOC Athlete Career Programme Forum, in Lima, Peru.
