IOC President looking forward to an exciting Opening Ceremony tonight

After a week of important IOC meetings, with just a few hours to go before the Opening Ceremony of the XX Olympic Winter Games, IOC President Jacques Rogge met the media and expressed his satisfaction: “The IOC is in healthy shape; the Games in Turin are ready; and I was told that the Opening Ceremony will be exciting.”

Emotion and inspiration
The IOC President underlined his confidence that the upcoming Games in Turin will meet the high expectations placed in them. Tonight’s Opening Ceremony will launch these Games with a generous portion of Italian passion and magic. “Each Opening Ceremony is an emotional moment and transmits the values of friendship, peace and tolerance we are promoting throughout our Movement. We are pleased to see athletes from a record number of 80 National Olympic Committees entering the stadium tonight and to offer an inspiring moment to over a million of TV spectators.”

Renewal at the IOC
The 118th IOC Session in Turin was one of renewal. “We saw our Olympic Movement grow, with the recognition of a new National Olympic Committee, the Marshall Islands, and we refreshed our membership with five new members, including two women.” The Session also elected new members to the Executive Board and a new Vice-President.

Qualification system for Beijing 2008 and programme for London 2012
The President specified the excellent reports the Session had received from the Organising Committees for Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Games. Concerning Beijing, the Session approved the qualification system and quotas for the 2008 Games, increasing women’s participation but keeping to the overall figure of 10,500 athletes. Concerning  the Olympic programme for London  2012 , the Session also affirmed the decisions taken at the Singapore Session in July 2005, namely  that baseball and softball  will not be included.
