IOC President in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, for FINA World Championships
IOC President Thomas Bach was in Gwangju on Tuesday for the FINA World Championships. Welcomed by FINA President and IOC Honorary Member Julio Maglione, he saw day three of action in the pool, with some exciting evening finals. After watching Italian star Simona Quadarella power her way to victory in the women’s 1,500 metres freestyle, he presented her with her gold medal in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Also there to compete were the two Syrian members of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team from the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Yusra Mardini and Rami Anis. Both are working to qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. President Bach was able to discuss their plans with them and find out about their progress.
Before heading for the pool, President Bach had taken part in a joint meeting with the FINA Bureau and the four IOC Vice-Presidents, Zaiqing Yu, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Uğur Erdener and Anita DeFrantz. This is the first time that such a joint meeting has taken place at a FINA World Championship, and both parties praised the close cooperation that has been taking place and the preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
After a whistlestop tour, the President heads for Tokyo on Wednesday for the celebrations to mark one year to go to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
