The IOC launched the #StrongerTogether campaign on 23 July 2020, one year before the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 to be held in 2021. The digital-led initiative brings to life the unity and solidarity of the Olympic community at a moment when the world can’t physically be together.
With the support of over 100 National Olympic Committees, International Federations, future and past Olympic Games host cities, Worldwide Olympic TOP Partners and Rights-Holding-Broadcasters, the campaign reached people in over 130 countries with this message of hope.
The campaign started with a live digital and TV moment featuring the Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee and the Olympic flame, which still burns in Japan. That spark launched a series of digital content and social media experiences that will run for the original dates of the Tokyo 2020 Games, 24 July to 9 August, and through to 21 August across the Olympic Channel and Olympic social media handles.
The first wave of activities on 23 July featured a series of Instagram live chats with athletes, including record-breaking gymnast Simone Biles.
To get people involved, a digital “flame” relay brought together 17 past and future host cities as they shared their flame moment at past Olympic Games with Tokyo 2020 in a show of solidarity on Twitter.
Fans also got to experience the Olympic flame come to life through a Twitter emoji engine. When a fan sent a Tweet with @Olympics #StrongerTogether 🔥, they received an automatic reply from @Olympics with a surprise clip of an Olympic cauldron moment from history. This is running from 23 July until 21 August.
In addition,150 iconic Olympic moment GIFs have been released on Tenor for people to use across all social media platforms.
At the centre of the campaign are the athletes who, through their tremendous determination and perseverance, now, more than ever, are inspiring examples of the human spirit. Their voice and stories lead the campaign on social media in one-on-one conversations and by sharing what made them stronger during this difficult time, and how they have found the resilience to re-focus on their Olympic dream.

With an aligned global marketing approach, the IOC unites the Olympic community behind the athletes and their resilience, as well as using the power of sport to bring us together even in the most difficult times. In doing this we have engaged millions of people across the world through digital activities that bring to life the Olympic spirit of solidarity.”
Still to come are 16 days of iconic, hair-raising Great Olympic Moments released every day on the Olympic Channel between 24 July and 21 August. A five-day festival of Olympian and Paralympian Athlete Experiences from 24 to 29 July will be hosted on the Airbnb website and select Olympic digital channels. This will feature live digital experiences with athletes like Naomi Osaka, Yusra Mardini, Rui Hachimura, Allyson Felix and Lex Gillette.
