IOC Executive Board meeting kicks off in Acapulco
The IOC Executive Board (EB) today started its last meeting of the year, convening with the 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) gathered in Acapulco, Mexico, to attend the XVII General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
The NOCs, which expressed their enthusiasm about the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that took place in August in Singapore, were asked by IOC President Jacques Rogge to leverage the momentum and further spread the YOG spirit in their countries in the run-up to the first winter edition of the event in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012.
The IOC President also urged the NOCs to ensure that more women attain key positions within their organisations; to encourage and promote the participation of athletes in the IOC’s Athlete Career Programme during their competitive years as well as after their retirement from high-level competition; and to continue to promote Olympic Day, on 23 June, as a regular celebration of the Olympic values.
In turn, the NOCs expressed their commitment to fully support the IOC’s efforts to combat irregular betting in sport and to promote a common position across all continents.
During its afternoon session, the EB received updates on Olympic Games preparations in London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016, as well as on the preparations for the Winter YOG in Innsbruck in 2012.
