IOC Declaration On The Occasion of World Aids Day

On the occasion of World Aids Day on 1 December, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) wishes to join the international community by sending a message in support of the ongoing fight against this devastating disease.

Although the IOC and the sports movement are not specialists on HIV/AIDS, the IOC nonetheless strongly believes that it can make a contribution to fighting this pandemic through advocacy, mobilisation, training, care, and measures to protect the rights of sportsmen and sportswomen around the globe, as well as by cooperating with the institutions more directly involved in this fight.

Sport breaks down barriers, promotes self-esteem, and can teach life skills and healthy behaviour. Athletes can be an inspiration and role models for the youth of the world. The IOC and the world of sport have their role to play alongside civil society and the world’s governments in building the coordinated effort needed to combat HIV/AIDS.
