IOC AND FIFA DISCUSS FUTURE OLYMPIC FOOTBALL COMPETITIONS
Lausanne, 12 January 2001 - Subsequent to yesterday’s meeting in Zurich between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Football Federation Association (FIFA), the IOC confirms the following points:
- for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004, it was agreed to maintain the status quo for the men's event, namely with 16 teams and players under 23 years of age apart from three over-age players per team. For the women's tournament, the number of teams will be increased from eight to twelve.
- the Games of the XXIX Olympiad will be held in the last week of July and the first week of August, a period which would be covered by the coordinated international calendar established by FIFA.
Both the IOC and FIFA agreed to continue their fruitful and efficient co-operation.
