IOC abhorred by murder of Iraqi athletes

The IOC expresses its distress on learning about the discovery of the remains of 13 members of an Iraqi taekwondo team in the province of Anbar this weekend.
"We find these acts against the sporting community abhorrent", said IOC President Jacques Rogge. "It is intolerable to see athletes becoming the victims of such horrible crimes. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased athletes", he added.
The IOC has been following the situation in Iraq very closely over the last year and, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has taken initiatives to help Iraqi sport. Many Iraqi athletes and coaches have been able to find adequate training opportunities within various NOCs for the Doha Asian Games last December and for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing (see related press release).
