Introducing NANJINGLELE: The Nanjing 2014 mascot!
Drum roll please... It is our pleasure to introduce to you the official mascot for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games: NANJINGLELE!
Bold, colourful and fun, we can’t wait to get to know this cheeky character, selected following a mascot design competition launched in China earlier this year and unveiled at a grand ceremony held in the host city today.
NANJINGLELE was inspired by a unique natural feature of the host city known as the ‘Rain-Flower Pebble’, or the ‘Riverstone’. The word ‘lele’ represents the sound of stones colliding together and is pronounced like the Chinese word meaning happiness or joy.
The mascot was revealed to the world for the first time by Chinese Olympic champions Sun Yang (swimming), Huang Xu (artistic gymnastics) and Wu Jingyu (taekwondo), much to the excitement of the 4,000-strong audience at the Nanjing Olympic Centre.
And, from the rush for photos after the ceremony, it’s clear this mascot has already captured the hearts of the Nanjing locals! We know we are already smitten too!
