Being an Athlete Role Model is all about sharing your experience, passing on your advice and helping the young athletes at Innsbruck 2012 make the most of the opportunities available at the first Winter Youth Olympic Games.
Among the 33 ARMs going to the Games are Swiss bobsleigher Ivo Rüegg, Chinese speed skater Yang Yang (S) and Finnish Nordic combined athlete Samppa Lajunen. Between them they have racked up an impressive tally of 10 Olympic medals and 13 World Championship titles, and there was one burning question we in the YOG team had to ask: What is their breakfast of champions?
A patriotic man, Ivo told us: “Always eat what you like the most. For me, the best was croissants from Switzerland.”
Samppa has these words of advice: “What you have for one single breakfast is not important. It’s what you have during a longer period that is important. I personally like bread, cereals, yoghurt, fruit, bacon and eggs, and it is important to have a balanced diet.”
And finally, Yang Yang (S) shared more than we expected, when she said: “I can’t remember exactly what I had for breakfast when I was competing but I remember that I always wore red underwear and socks!”
