How to… go beyond competition

Investing a lot of time, energy and commitment in your sport is essential if you want to be the best. But it’s also vital to find a balance between your sport and education in order to enhance your career prospects after competition.

A series of workshops at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games in 2010 showed the young athletes how small steps now can have a big impact later on in life. They discussed with mentors how the skills they have developed on the field of play, such as discipline, organization and determination, are transferable skills that are desirable in the work place, and also the career opportunities sport can offer, either in a volunteer or professional role.

So, think about what you really want from life and start planning your career early on.
