Hosts Great Britain shine on London 2012 hockey pitch

Great Britain’s women’s hockey team already look at home on the London 2012 pitch, having won the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament – the first major event to be held at the Olympic hockey venue.

The British women beat reigning world champions Argentina 2-0 in the final and didn’t concede a single goal throughout the four-team tournament, which ran from 2-6 May at the Riverbank Arena, within the Olympic Park in London.

“We played really well," said Britain’s Beth Storry. "We played our style of hockey and it was a positive way to finish the tournament. It’s great to keep a clean sheet in all four games; it’s great for us defensively.

“Winning in front of the home crowd feels really great. The crowds were really amazing, cheering all the time, which lifted our spirits. It’s a good sign for the Games.”

The British men’s team also performed well, finishing third after securing a 2-1 win over India. The men’s final saw reigning Olympic champions Germany beat world champions Australia 5-2 and Great Britain Head Coach Jason Lee was quick to praise the atmosphere in the crowd at the Olympic venue.

“It’s going to be an exciting place to be in the summer," he said. "I hope the crowd keep up their support and backing for the team.”
