Four Cities to Compete to Host 2010 Olympic Winter Games

Vancouver (CAN), Salzburg (AUT), Pyeongchang (KOR) and Bern (SUI)* were today accepted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board in Lausanne as Candidate Cities to host the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010. The cities were accepted from a total of eight Applicant Cities, also including Sarajevo (BIH), Jaca (ESP), Harbin (CHN) and Andorra La Vella (AND) which had submitted applications to the IOC in May this year.

The Candidate Cities were selected after a study of their application was made by a working group comprising IOC administration members and external experts. An assessment was made of each Applicant City's ability to stage high-level, international, multi-sport events and their ability to organise quality Olympic Winter Games in 2010, against a set of 11 technical assessment criteria: Government Support and Public Opinion, General Infrastructure, Sports Venues, Olympic Village, Environmental Conditions and impact, Accommodation, Transport, Security, Experience from past sports events, Finance and General Concept.

The four Candidate Cities now have until 10 January 2003 to submit their candidature file to the IOC. Guidance will be provided by the IOC during a five-day seminar in Lausanne (9 - 13 September) when the requirements needed to organise and host an Olympic Games, plus background information on the Olympic Movement, will be outlined. The candidature files will be analysed in detail by the IOC Evaluation Commission, which will also make inspections of the Candidate Cities, before issuing a report in May 2003. The final decision on the host city for the XXI Olympic Winter Games will be made by the full IOC membership during the 115th IOC Session in Prague in July 2003.

Please note: The Manual for Candidate Cities for the XXI Olympic Winter Games 2010, which outlines the procedures, rules and deadlines to be respected until the election of the host city, as well as the in-depth questionnaire which Candidate Cities must respond to in their candidature file, will be available on the IOC website from tomorrow.

*Cities are listed in the order of drawing of lots.
