Five Years To Go Til Rio 2016

Today, Rio 2016 celebrates five years to go until the Opening Ceremony of its Games. Elected back in October 2009, at the IOC Session in Copenhagen, the Brazilian city has, for the past two years, been laying the ground work that will allow it to create a fantastic experience for athletes and spectators in 2016. Since its Danish triumph, Rio 2016 has made great strides as an organisation, developing good plans and making an excellent start to its marketing programme.

Speaking at the close of the last Coordination Commission visit to Rio in June, Commission Chair Nawal El Moutawakel said: “It’s been a year since the Coordination Commission last visited Rio and we are pleased with the amount of work that has already been undertaken by the Rio organisers. They have a solid and experienced team and this has helped to speed things along. Strong support from all levels of government has also played an important role in allowing the progress that we have seen this week to take place, and it will be key to the Games’ success in the future.”

With venue construction and infrastructure  moving ahead, and a clear focus on the athletes and legacy, Rio is planning not just to make the Games in 2016 a great success, but also to ensure that they leave the best legacy possible for the community and country. Five years remain for them to achieve their lofty targets, but, if anyone can, Brazil can!
