First women wrestlers on the mat

Icho Chiharu from Japan and Belisle Lindsday from Canada will enter into history as the first women wrestlers competing at Olympic Games. The bout was won by the Japanese wrestler.

Fifty athletes in four categories
Fifty female athletes compete over two days in four different categories: 48kg, 55kg, 63kg and 72kg. The competition format for wrestling started of with four pools in which the competitors fight each other. The winners of the pools move on into the semi-finals.

The finals in all categories take place today at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall.
