First sports event at an Olympic venue

As from today the first sports event is taking place at an Olympic venue in Athens. 557 athletes from 45 countries are taking part in the FISA 2003 World Junior Championships that will be held from 6 to 9 August at the Schinias Olympic Rowing Centre.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the International Rowing Federation (FISA), Denis Oswald and the ATHOC President, Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki. In her opening speech, Mrs Angelopoulos-Daskalaki underlined the importance of these test events for Athens 2004 "as the lessons learnt from these events will allow us to improve our procedures and organisation."

The purpose of the event is mainly to test three parametres: competition management (the organisation in a venue where the Olympic Games will be held), human resources (the teams that will operate during the Games) and technology (testing the systems and infrastructures).

Mrs Angelopoulos-Daskalaki was pleased that Athens 2004 will leave a positive legacy in Schinias, "as we have returned a wetland and woodland which is a large bird refuge to their original state. All this land has been designated a park for citizens to enjoy in the years that follow the successful celebration of the Olympic Games".
