First athletics competition for women in Kabul
A first athletics competition for girls and women will be arranged in Kabul’s Ghazi Stadium on Thursday 20 November. The competition, organised by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) with the support of the Embassy of Denmark, is meant to inspire increased sports activities in schools and universities, and to identify athletic talents.
Qualification event for Athens
It is also a national qualification event for the Olympic Games to be held in Athens in August next year. Similar competitions are currently being organised in a number of provinces by the NOC in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the UN’s Youth and Children Development Programme (YCDP).
A national final will take place in Kabul on 15 December. The winner of the National Championships in the 100m or 200m will go to Tehran (Iran) to train with other Afghan athletes on an Olympic scholarship.
