Elect the greatest Olympian
As from today, www.olympic.org offers you the possibility to elect the Greatest Olympian. The choice is double: you can choose the Greatest Olympian of all time, as well as the Greatest Olympian of the Athens Games. The new section can be found in the Athlete section.
A subjective selection
In our latest edition of the Olympic Review (cover page with Jesse Owens), Times journalist John Goodbody, who covers his 10th Olympic Summer Games here in Athens, tried to make an as objective selection as possible with Jesse Owens, Fanny Blankers-Koen, Paarvo Nurmi, Emil Zatopek, Dawn Fraser, Jim Thorpe, Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, Steve Redgrave and Aleksandr Karelin.
From Spiros Louis to Jürgen Hingsen
Various personalities from the world of sport gave the Olympic Review their opinion on the Greatest Olympians. IOC President Jacques Rogge mentions among others the IOC members Sergey Bubka and Alexander Popov. For Michael Schumacher it is Jürgen Hingsen; for Kip Keino the greatest Olympians are Paavo Nurmi and Emil Zatopek; Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki chose Spiros Louis and Irena Szewinska voted for Wilma Rudolph.
