Dow Solutions take centre stage at Bolshoi Ice Dome
With the countdown to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games continues, high-performing solutions from Worldwide Olympic Partner Dow are being used throughout the Sochi Olympic Park, most notably at the Bolshoi Ice Dome - one of Sochi’s most iconic venues.
“We are extremely proud of our science and technology-based contributions that enable more sustainable, safer and higher-performing venues at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games,” said Arthur Eritspokhov, executive director for Dow Olympic Operations in Russia.
During the construction of the Bolshoi Ice Dome – which will host Olympic ice hockey matches next year – Dow worked closely with the project’s contractors to provide a number of unique solutions, including insulation and heat transfer fluids that enable an energy-efficient and reliable, long-lasting ice rink.
As the Official Chemistry Company and the Official Insulation Partner of the Olympic Games, Dow applied its technical expertise and unmatched innovation portfolio to help build a world-class ice surface for top-performing athletes.
DOWCAL™ Heat Transfer Fluids were used to create and maintain the arena’s high-performance ice surfaces. The heat transfer fluids are also being used in the air conditioning system to provide reliable, steady temperature control to maintain ice quality and allow better performance and safety for athletes. In both applications, the heat transfer fluids from Dow help control operating and maintenance costs.
Several other solutions from Dow were incorporated throughout the Bolshoi Ice Dome, including products that were used in concrete mixture for the flooring beneath the ice, contributing to greater workability during application, and industrial coatings that were applied to the building’s metal structural components, providing protection from corrosion and enhanced durability.
Dow insulation and semi-conductive compounds for cable installations will also provide reliability and long service life, while polyurethane systems were used in the durable and comfortable seats, helping to improve the Olympic experience for spectators.
