DENIS OSWALD APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF THE COORDINATION COMMISSION FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN ATHENS, 2004
Lausanne, 23 July 2001 - The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dr Jacques Rogge, has decided to appoint Mr Denis Oswald as Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004. Mr Oswald will thus take over from Dr Rogge as Chairman of the Commission, as the post was made vacant upon Dr Rogge’s election as IOC President on 16 July in Moscow.
Mr Oswald, who has been an IOC member in Switzerland since 1991, was already involved in the Coordination Commission.
Born in Neuchâtel in 1947, he was a member of the Swiss rowing team from 1968 to 1976 and participated in the Olympic Games in Mexico City (1968), where he won a bronze medal, Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976). He became President of the International Rowing Federation (FISA) in 1989, and President of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) in 2000. In particular, Mr Oswald was elected a member of the IOC Executive Board in September 2000.
