Deborah Compagnoni for a third Olympic title
Italy’s Deborah Compagnoni won the super-G at the Albertville Games in 1992, then the giant slalom in Lillehammer in 1994. Here is the greatest female Italian skier in history at the start of the second round of the giant slalom of the Nagano Games on Mount Higashidate in Shiga Kogen on 20 February 1998, with, at the bottom, the possibility of winning a third Olympic title in as many participations in the Games.
With the best time in the first round, she set off on the last attempt to try to beat the excellent time set by Austria’s Alexandra Meissnitzer. The weather was cloudy, some rain fell on the slopes, and visibility at the bottom was reduced. Did Compagnoni retain her title?
