DEATH OF PHILIPPE CHATRIER
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (23 June 2000) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was today deeply saddened to learn of the death of Philippe Chatrier, IOC member from 1990 to 1996 and then honorary member, and president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) from 1977 to 1991.
“Philippe Chatrier was one of those great sports leaders who, through their passion for sport, contribute greatly to the development of their federation. Tennis was Philippe Chatrier’s favourite sport. He devoted his whole life to it with undiminished enthusiasm”, declared the IOC President.
The French Junior Tennis Champion in 1945, Philippe Chatrier was a member of France’s Davis Cup team from 1948 to 1950, and captained the team from 1969 to 1972. He also played at Wimbledon for four consecutive years.
