Death of Mr Alfredo Goyeneche
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (18 March 2001) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was greatly saddened to learn of the tragic death on Saturday of Mr Alfredo Goyeneche, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee since 1998, and an IOC member since 2000.
A bronze medallist at the European Junior Equestrian Championships in 1956 and a participant in the Games of the XVII Olympiad in Rome in 1960, Mr Goyeneche was President of the Spanish Equestrian Federation from 1981 to 1987.
"Mr Goyeneche played a very active and important role in the development of sport in Spain, and his contribution has always been highly valuable to the entire Olympic Movement", said the IOC President.
The IOC extends its deepest sympathy to Mr Goyeneche's family and friends.
