Death of IOC Member Sinan Erdem

It was with great sadness that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) learned today of the death at the age of 76 of Sinan Erdem, IOC Member in Turkey since 1988.

Coach of the Turkish volleyball team for many years, Mr Erdem contributed greatly to the promotion of this sport throughout his career, occupying various positions within the Turkish Volleyball Federation and then the International Volleyball Federation, as a Council Member since 1965.

President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey since 1990, Mr Erdem was also a member of numerous IOC Commissions such as the IOC 2000 Reform Commission in 1999, and the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, Athens 2004, since 1998.

The IOC President said from Barcelona: "Sinan Erdem has been a great ambassador of the Olympic values in Turkey and an active member of the Executive Committee of the International Committee for the Mediterranean Games. The whole Olympic Movement expresses its deepest sympathy to his family."
