Capturing the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games one year on!

This time last year, London photographer Billy Rowlinson and British gymnast Sam Oldham were packing for the trip of a lifetime to the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Both captured the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games in their own unique way; Billy behind the lens of his camera as winner of the YOG Photographer Challenge, and Sam in front of a screaming crowd as he claimed gold on the horizontal bars.

One year on, both are now looking forward to the London 2012 Olympic Games and they had a chance to share their excitement when they met up for a photo shoot at Sam’s training camp at Loughborough University.

Speaking about the shoot, Billy, 17, said: “It was cool to meet an athlete my age who is very likely to qualify for London next year.

“It was strange - a few days later I saw him standing in Trafalgar Square (London) alongside Olympic champions, the British Prime Minister (David Cameron) and (International Olympic Committee President) Jacques Rogge to name just a few. So I know he will do well.”

Sam isn’t the only one doing well. Thanks to his great work in Singapore, Billy has been offered work experience at top international news agency Reuters and he has also been asked back as an official YOG photographer for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“It means everything to me,” said Billy of the opportunity. “I still can’t believe it. I'm just speechless, but really excited.”
