Candidates for the IOC Athletes’ Commission

There will be 15 athlete candidates for the IOC Athletes’ Commission election, which will take place from 8 to 23 February 2006 during the XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin. This was decided today in Singapore by the IOC Executive Board. The members whose mandates are coming to an end are: Jari Kurri and Adne Sondral.

Participation in the Olympic Games
As of 1 June, the deadline for submitting candidatures, the IOC had received 15 files, all examined by the election committee for the 2006 Games. Only NOCs with an athletes’ commission may put forward a candidate. In order to be eligible, candidates must have participated in the last edition of the Winter Games in Salt Lake City, or be taking part in the Games in Turin.

Athletes elected by their peers
Since 1996, the majority of the members (i.e. 12 out of 19) of the IOC Athletes’ Commission have been elected by their peers during the Olympic Games. In Turin next February, the athletes will therefore choose two of their peers who will represent them on the IOC Commission. Voting stations will be made available to the athletes in each of the three Olympic villages located in Turin, Bardonecchia and Sestrières. After acceptance by the IOC Session, those elected will become IOC members for the duration of their eight-year mandate within the Commission.

The voice of the athletes
Created in 1981, the IOC Athletes’ Commission provides a link between Olympic athletes and the IOC. It also allows athletes to have their voices heard within the Olympic Movement. Since 2000, the Commission Chairman has been no other than Olympic champion and six-times world champion in the pole vault, Sergey Bubka, who is also an IOC Executive Board member.
