4,905 Venues
In 4,905 venues across the city, around one million people from Beijing took part in morning exercises to celebrate two years to go. The morning exercises were held in venues as diverse as the Temple of Heaven, community centres and sports training centres. The participants’ morning exercises covered a wide variety of popular Chinese sports such as shadowboxing, hula hoop, eurhythmics and martial arts, as well as Olympic sports like table tennis and basketball.
Other Activities In Beijing
8 August 2006 also saw other activities taking place across the Chinese capital city to mark the occasion. These included a press conference by BOCOG officials at the State Council Information Office to the national and international media on Beijing 2008’s preparations, the premiere of an Olympic-themed play for children involving the Beijing 2008 mascots at the Beijing Children’s Art Theatre and many smaller sport for all activities ranging from dances to sports demonstrations.
New Homepage
The IOC used the two years to go date to launch its new look homepage at, with a highly visible teaser inviting you to explore the official website of Beijing 2008, as well as launching its new “news room”, which is a one-stop-shop for media that will allow them to access broadcast quality video and media information from the IOC. A web cast was also held on the Around The Rings (ATR) website (this website is not an official IOC site), which invited several members of the Olympic Family to discuss the preparations for the Beijing Games (Click here to access the web cast: [English only]). People involved in the web cast included Hein Verbruggen, IOC Coordination Commission Chairman for the Beijing Games; Gunilla Lindberg, IOC Executive Board member; and Wang Wei, Executive Vice President of BOCOG.
