Beijing 2008: International Competition for Architectural Design
The international competition for the architectural design of the National Tennis Centre and the National Hockey Stadium was officially launched on 18 February 2004. The competition is open to outstanding design companies, firms and institutes worldwide. Six to eight individual or consortium designers will be invited to participate in the competition after initial pre-qualification screening.
The National Tennis Centre and the National Hockey Stadium are to be located in the southern area of the National Olympic Sports Centre on Beijing’s Olympic Green. Upon completion, they will be used as competition venues for the tennis and hockey events during the 2008 Olympic Games. After the Olympic Games, they will be turned into a multifunctional sports and cultural area specialised in hosting tennis and hockey games.
Aims of the architectural design competition
The architectural design competition aims to continue the philosophy expressed in the master plan of the "Olympic Green", to fully reflect the concepts of the Games, to establish the new image of the metropolis, and to make the National Tennis Centre and the National Hockey Stadium the largest and the most state-of-the-art sports facilities of their kinds in Beijing.
Pre-qualification documents can be downloaded from the official website of the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (www.beijing-2008.org).
